Most men want to do the right thing. At work, at home, in their relationships. But finding the space to talk about that stuff, without it feeling heavy or awkward, isn’t always easy.
That’s what The Shift is for.
So what actually is it?
At the start, it’s just a chat.
A group of men from across the health board, getting together to talk about the things that come up in everyday life tea in hand. Work pressures. Relationships. Being a good colleague, a good manager, a good mate, dad or husband. No agenda, no pressure, no jargon.
We’ll work with you to shape what it becomes — the topics, the format, when and where it meets. This is yours to help build.
Who’s it for?
Any man working within ABUHB who is interested in being part of it. You don’t need to have it all figured out. You don’t need to have a reason. You just need to be curious.
What might come up?
We’ll follow your lead, but conversations might cover things like:
- Stress, pressure and how we actually cope with it
- Being a better manager, colleague, dad, partner — whatever’s relevant to you
- How men can play a positive role at work and in their communities
- And yes, some of the bigger stuff too — when you’re ready for it
Nothing you say goes outside the room. Ever. And, we will use what’s said in the
room to build future meetings.
What’s the first step?
We’d love to come along to your team meeting for 10 minutes, or for you to join the next network session. From there, you decide if it’s for you.
If you would like to get involved fill out this form and we will get back to you.
If you have any questions, or something is stopping you from getting involved get in touch with Jake or the team at hello@ourvoiceourjourney.org.uk and we can have a chat.
A bit of background
The Shift has grown out of the She Is Not Your Rehab movement, which has been
running events across Gwent and beyond. It’s built on the same belief — that when men are supported and engaged, everyone benefits. This network is part of that next step.
It’s based in Gwent, runs during work time, and has the full backing of ABUHB for you to take time out of your day to attend.
Jake Poll is leading the network. He has experience running successful mens groups in Leeds that focus on safe spaces for men to get together and talk. Covering everything from emotional regulation, building healthy relationships and figuring things out.The Shift has been commissioned by ABUHB VAWDASV Team and is hosted by Our Voice Our Journey CIC.
